Netgear DEVG2020 L2L with Netgear Prosafe FVS338

Had a customer replace their branch-office gateway from a FVS318 to a Telstra-supplied Netgear DEVG2020. Unfortunately the VPN ciphers used by DEVG2020 are unknown, albeit using StrongSwan as the VPN platform. After scouring through StrongSwan documentation and what not, the settings that seemed to be configured on the DEVG2020 are –

Phase1: AES-128, SHA-1, DH-2, SA-3600

Phase2: 3DES, SHA-1, SA-3600

VMware Workstation 10 and GNS3

Had an issue whereby a dual-homed VM (1 for internet, 1 for GNS3 network) would not allow pings from a cloud-object (in GNS3) to a virtual router. Ended up disabling TCP, UDP and IPv4 offloading on the GNS3 NIC and all good.

Lync 2013 constant pop-up when working on Office 2013 documents

FYI –

Migrated a client from Office 2010 to Office 2013 subscription – Lync kept popping up when opening other Office documents (Excel, Word). Removing all traces of Office 2010, repairing Office 2013 etc; did not resolve the issue. After re-creating the user’s local profile, the problem disappeared.

TLDR; fix is to re-create users profile

Server 2012 RDS – unpin server manager and powershell from taskbar

Remember this will only work for NEW users; those users who have already logged onto the RDS server, this will not apply so you will need to delete the local profiles.

Create new GPO

Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > File System -> Add New..

Add these entries –

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows PowerShell\Windows PowerShell.lnk

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows PowerShell\Windows PowerShell (x86).lnk

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Windows PowerShell ISE.lnk

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools\Windows PowerShell.lnk

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Server Manager.lnk

Remove Creator Owner and Users – propagate changes

Link GPO to RDS OU

GPupdate /force

Exchange 2010 OWA password reset

Exchange 2010 OWA supports password reset. Had an issue whereby we would have to specify domain\username to bring up the expiredpassword.aspx page. Found older OWA files living under the OWA VD of the live Exchange box, renamed the folder with .bak, restarted IIS, tested all OK.

Task scheduler suddenly stops triggering until every Sunday at a specific time

Had an issue with a Server 2008 box with multiple tasks, come Monday and all the tasks have not completed; even though last result is 0x0. Turns out the issue is related to the Windows Live Social Object Extractor Engine updating it’s definitions. Even though this task was set to run next on a Tuesday, disabling/removing Windows Live Essentials 2011 fixed the issue.

Export Outlook groups to new profile

MigrationWiz didn’t seem to migrate the Outlook groups within a user’s profile to Office 365. To do so –

Go through steps 1-3, above, and THEN do the following:

  1. Open the PST file within Outlook
  2. Go to the Contacts for the PST file you opened
  3. Change the View to List View
  4. There’s a little icon, paper icon … Right Click on it and choose to arrange by Location ….
  5. Click on the little icon to sort by icon … This places all your distribution lists “together” 🙂
  6. Select all the distribution lists
  7. Either Copy and Paste into the NEW Destination Contacts list, i.e., the Rackspace Account OR Simply drag them
